Hello

My name is Kari Barnes. I created the concept of the IP TechBox to help clients think about the IP tools available to them to build barriers around their company to protect their innovation and brand.

My expertise is in creating patent portfolios for technological inventions (software and hardware primarily) and licensing the protected technology.

My Story

I help high-tech businesses of all sizes protect, exploit and monetize intellectual property assets, providing strategic advice on complex IP transactions and overseeing the prosecution and defense of patents and trademarks.

Although I primarily focus on software and hardware products, I also have experience in a broad range of technologies, including aerospace, deployable and collapsible structures, medical devices, after market car accessories, automated traffic detection and response; unmanned aerial vehicles; and electronic and mechanical toys.

Experience

Prior to starting my own firm, I trained for over fifteen years at large national and smaller regional law firms. In these environments, I worked with clients in developing and implementing global intellectual property portfolios.

I currently use my extensive experience in many areas to create a dynamic and specific intellectual property portfolio strategy tailor made for each of my clients. This experience includes:

  • negotiating transactions around intellectual property, such as the sale or purchase of IP assets;

  • drafting ownership transfers, such as from employee inventors or development contractors;

  • participating in the formation of companies with a mind for innovation;

  • performing diligence of intellectual property assets in merger or acquisitions;

  • creating intellectual property programs and incentives; and

  • assisting companies to build a brand and identity.

I started my own firm for the flexibility it provided in creating stronger relationships with my clients that are not hindered by the billable hour. I realized that many clients did not actually talk to an attorney when they needed to, because of the fear of incurring the costs with each phone call. I therefore came up with subscription alternatives that allow a company to know what their costs are and have the availability of legal advice when they need it.

Since starting my own firm, I have successfully partnered with my clients in ways that was not possible when I was only considered as outside counsel. The intent is to integrate my skills within your company. I can therefore participate and advise on the intellectual property strategy and also assist in the implementation and integration of the strategy within the company. With the continued participation, I can continue to evolve and improve the strategy and implementation as the company grows and new opportunities or challenges arise.

Before Law

Before becoming an attorney, I was an opto-electronics researcher. Realizing that I thoroughly enjoyed engineering and physics. Unfortunately, I realized the laboratory environment was not for me beccause of the isolated atmosphere. Intellectual Property law gave me that opportunity to continue to enjoy the science while interacting with people and companies to have an observable impact. I have the opportunity to participate in new technology and solutions at the cutting edge of technology, while engaging with clients.

Community

Kari has been involved in government sponsored programs that support recipients of the Small Business Innovative Research grants. She also routinely provides time at start up forums, incubators, and non-profit programs to help start up companies.
